Search Engine and Directory Submission Tips

Print out the entire page before you start your submissions.  Cross off each successful submission and date it.  Each Search Engine or Directory has their own unique method and rules to index new listings.  You will not get to submit to all of these at the same time and will need to go back again possibly several times to complete the submissions.  Many SE's and Directories turn off their submit pages for a period of time to catch up on indexing the new listings.  You will need to go back to these periodically and try to submit again.   Most of the "submit" buttons link directly to a submission form.  These are the ones that you should complete first.

Other "submit" buttons will link to an instruction page.  These instruction pages direct you to "dig" into the Directory and find the most appropriate catagory for your web site.  These are much more time consuming and with some site content, downright confusing.  If your site happens to be about a particular hobby, and hobbies isn't listed as a category, you might have to suggest a new category to the SE.  Most of the SE's and Directories are ruthless about spamming.  In their instructions, they will tell you to look up your web site to see if it is already listed.   If your site is listed with them and you re-submit, they will simply delete your site and bar you for life from ever submitting to them again.  That is why it is important to print out the whole page and keep track of who you successfully posted to.

Many SE's and Directories have blocked submissions from automated software.  Don't expect immediate results when you complete your submissions. Some SE's still index by hand and can take up to 3 months to list your site.  Others have automated scripts and can index you instantly, but most fall somewhere in between these two extremes.   Do it right, be patient, and the traffic will come.  One last item-add link form types and sizes vary greatly.  They range from just a few lines to full page forms that are time consuming to fill out.
